There are several options you can consider when thinking about finding a home, depending on whether you want to buy a property or rent.

Shared ownership

The Council has a scheme where you can buy part of a property to reduce the cost of your rent.

A smaller deposit is needed to buy a share of your home and so this can be an easier way to get onto the property ladder.

If you want to rent a home from the Council now, or at some point in the future, you should register on the Council’s Housing List.

There is a long wait for accommodation so it's a good idea to look at all your options for a home.

To register you will need to provide identification and a reference.

If you owe rent arrears to the Council or any other landlord you will need an arrangement in place to repay them. You will also need to show a commitment to pay your rent before you will be able to bid for accommodation.

You can register and find more information on the Sheffield Property Shop website.

Housing Associations are independent, social landlord organisations. They provide secure, affordable housing for people in housing need.

There are around 18,000 Housing Association owned homes of all sizes and types in Sheffield. They're regulated by the Regulator of Social Housing.

Many Housing Association properties are advertised through the Council’s housing register. You can also register directly with some associations.
