There are simple low-cost solutions that can help you in the bedroom, and other solutions that are more expensive but may suit your needs better or you just prefer.
If buying equipment isn’t enough you may need advice on making an adaptation to your home.
Help to get in and out of bed.
If your bed is too low you can get simple low-cost risers that extend the legs of the bed to the right height.
If you struggle to sit up in bed there are powered beds that raise and lower. Some of these can raise both the head or foot of the bed, good if you need to raise your legs in bed.
If you need support to help you move in bed there are many choices of ropes and hoists – some you can use yourself like a pull rope or ladder to sit up, and some are good for carers to use like an electric hoist to lift you in and out of bed.
There are lots of other types of equipment for the bed – including sliding sheets that make it easier to move on your mattress, different shapes of foam pillows and wedges, and bed rails if you are at risk of falling off the bed while you’re asleep.
On the Living Made Easy website you’ll find examples of different types of equipment to help make your bed more suitable for you, examples of different suppliers and how to purchase.

Storing and putting on clothing and footwear.
There are simple low-cost solutions to help you to access your clothes and footwear, like a stick you can use to reach up to hanging rails (often called a reacher or grabber) which cost £8 to £15 (September 2023). There’s also equipment to help you put on clothes like long handled shoe horns and shoe removers, or a raised shoe rack so you don’t have to bend so much to choose shoes, trainers or other footwear.
There are also moving rails you can fit to a wardrobe that you can operate to lower and raise a rail. They range from a pull down rail for about £50 to over £2,000 for an electric powered rail (September 2023).
On the Living Made Easy website you’ll find examples of different types of grab stick, moving wardrobe rails and other options to make your wardrobes and drawers more suitable for you, examples of different suppliers and how to purchase.
